Patriots, not much

I do not understand why a professional hockey player, that once was a kid dreaming about playing pro, would refuse to go to the All-Star game when invited.

I do not understand Ryan Dempster, Jeff Francis and other not joining Team Canada for the baseball classic either. "with my new contract I feel I have an obligation to the Cubs." said Dempster. You do, but Alex Rodriguez, who is making a tad more money on a longuer contract and is arguably the best hitter in baseball, had no hesitation in his decision. He will play.

I really hope, if the Cubs play in Toronto this year, that those guys are booed out of the building.

Half Season Awards

Time for the Half Season awards

Eastern Conference MVP - Alex Ovechkin Washinton Capitals. Clearly the best all around player in the game.
Runner up - Zack Parize . NJ Devils. Picked up his game when Brodeur went down to keep the Devils competitive

Western Conference MVP - Jarome Iginla- Calgary Flames. The other best all around player in the game.
Runner up - Daniel Sedin - Vancouver Canucks. The best of the twins is underated and overlooked by many. Luongo was great when he was there but who faces the top oppositon night in and night out?

Eastern conference Comeback player of the year - A Head above everyone- Simon Gagné - Flyers. only coming back was tremendous. Back in the elite all around players is unbelievable.

Western Conference Comeback player of the year - Patrick Marleau - SJ Sharks - Here is one player that enjoyed his new coach the most. The year I do not pick him in my pool, he excels.

Eastern conference Best offensive Defensman - Mark Streit - NY Islanders. Say what you want but to be one point being the leader on that team is quite an accomplishment. Someone in the Habs scouting team has clearly not done his job.

Western Conference Best offensive Defensman - Shea Weber - Nashville Predators. Leading goal scorer among D-man on a defensive team.

Eastern conference Best coach - Claude Julien - Boston Bruins. Can someone explain what happend in NJ two years ago ? that guy is a winner and should be a front runner for Team Canada at the 2010 Olympics.

Western Conference Best coach - Joel Quenville - Chicago Black Hawks. I did not like the Denis Savard firing at the time but force is to admit that it was a needed move. The Baby Hawks are doing all the right things right now.

Eastern conference Surprise player of the year - David Krejci Boston Bruins. Name me one person who predicted this guy to be 12 th scorer in the league at the half way point?

Western Conference Surprise player of the year - Devin Setoguchi SJ Sharks . Some would say playing with Thornton helps but Devin overtook the Cheechoo spot because he cold score.

Eastern conference Best Goalie - Tim Thomas - Bruins - Best GAA and best SV% in the league will give you that honor.

Western Conference Best Goalie - Nicklas Backstroms - Wild - On an offensive challenge team he posted the bets defensive stats. The system does help but he still needs to stop the pucks. 7th in save in the league. without him there is no hope for Minnessota this year.

Boston Bruins

Bruins vs Habs tonight and round two of the Lucic-Komisarek confrontation. I do not expect Komisarek to fight but a good bodycheck and intimidation game is on. I do not remember a time when a Boston- Montreal game was not entertaining. From the time when I was a kid when the Bruins were in town it was always exciting. From the Rick Middleton, Brad Park, Terry O'Reilly , Reggie Lemelin era to the Craig Janney, Cam Neely, Ray Bourque, Andy Moog teams to now it always have been interesting and hard fought battles.

I remember the Chris Nilan or John Kordic fights with Jay Miller, the TicTacToe goals of Bourque-Oates-Neely and now I have to admit the honey bears are looking very solid. Maybe the best Bruins team since the beginning of the 90 when they reach the final only to lose to Edmonton and Bill Ranford in 7 games.

I remember the Boston fans sitting in the blues at the old Forum, completely drunk after the second period, chanting and having fun but always respectfull of the 10 years old french kid sitting beside them. Even protecting him from some of their friends who were enjoying the moment a little too much. My Dad and I had mini-season tickets in the rafters at that time. 10 games packages that always had to include a Boston game.

Tonight though my dearly Habs are the underdogs, they do have a chance to break the losing skid they are on against the Bruins. We woldnt want to lose 8 straight against them like they suffered last year do we?

Imagine the actual Habs team with Lecavalier as their leaders going in Boston....

Lecavalier rumor

So Lecavalier is on the blocks? Isnt that rumour coming back every year when winter starts to cold up? Sure would look great in a Habs jersey but realisticaly that wont happen. Even if Bob gainey would offer the moon, the salary caps will prevent Vinny the great from wearing the CH.

the latest is Higgins, Plekanec, PK Subban and picks. Looks like a fair deal to me but the Habs need capp space to allow the 7 mil on the books. So what does Bob to do? Shop one of his future UFA and it's expiring contracts for picks himself? But who?

By the way things are looking right now, Koivu seem expendable since the team is winning and scoring more , a bit like last year, when Kovalev wears the C. But we also have to look ahead to next year.

With 10 free agents on the team and with Plekanec and Higgins gone, what would be the make up? Abunch of kids (Paxiorety, D'Agostini, Maxwell...) with Lecavalier and the Kostystyn brothers. Is that enough?

I say yes. The kids have proven that they can play and Kovalev would stay in a city that loves him and that he likes for a 4 or 5 millions price tag. The only key would be to sign Komisarek to a 5 millions per year contract which wont happen, not after the Commordore signing of last year. If only O'Byrne would have develloped a bit quicker...
